Recycling centres and garden waste

Kildare County Council has two recycling centres. Silliot Hill, near Kilcullen, is run for the council by AES and takes bulky items and garden waste, charged by weight, but not construction and demolition waste. The other is Gallows Hill in Athy. Neither is in the north of the county.

If you would rather pay someone to take it away: Anyone collecting waste for money, including a gardener or a man with a van doing a clear-out, needs a waste collection permit from the National Waste Collection Permit Office (Waste Management Act 1996, section 34). Handing your waste to someone without one is an offence for you, not just for them. Ask for the permit number and check it on nwcpo.ie before anything goes in the van.

Hedges: the 1 March to 31 August rule

Under section 40 of the Wildlife Act 1976 it is an offence to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy vegetation growing in any hedge or ditch between 1 March and 31 August. The Act lists exemptions, among them agriculture and forestry, public health or safety, noxious weeds and clearing a site for building, but has no specific one for gardens. Separately, wilfully disturbing a wild bird on or near a nest with eggs or unflown young is an offence at any time of year (section 22).

In practice: if your garden backs onto fields or a roadside hedgerow, book the big cut for September to February, and whatever the month, ask your gardener to check for nests first.

Maynooth and student lets

Maynooth University had 16,110 students in 2023/24, by its own count. If you let to students, or you are moving out of a student let, post the end-of-tenancy clean or the van run early and say exactly what the clean has to cover. The oven, the fridge and the inside of the windows are the usual extras, and leaving them out of the post is how a quote changes on the day.

Skips

Ask the skip company what Kildare County Council needs for a skip on a public road before you book, and whether that is included in the price.
